So my question is this. Are there any recommendations on REALLY good feature phones. One that works, not like so many that have issues from the time you pull them out of the box and are never resolved by the service provider or the manufacturer. Just a good feature phone.

I have no problem paying a good price on a pay as you go phone. I do expect the phone to work properly. In every way.

I am a restaurant owner in Baltimore and have been successfully employing refugees from the International Rescue Committee (IRC) resettlement center for the past seven years (“Short course in American life,” March 3). All of them are legally authorized to work in the United States and pay taxes. Almost all of them live in the city.

My workforce is a 50/50 mix of refugees and non-refugees. I have found the additional workforce diversity greatly reduced “drama” and increased standards for all.

Small businesses–those with annual sales of less than $5 million-account for almost 97% of all U.S. businesses and 45% of the gross national product. An estimated 100 million Americans, more than half the labor force, rely directly or indirectly on small companies for their livelihood.

Venturing into a small business is risky. The estimated average mortality rate of U.S. businesses is more than 10,000 a year, with a failure rate of about 70% for small businesses. Most small business failures occur in the first year of operation due to insufficient sales, high operating expenses, receivable difficulties, poor inventory management, inadequate financing and cash flow problems. Timely forecasts and planning can help prevent these problems and allow the company to be prepared when an emergency arises. “Strategic Planning: What CPAs Need to Know” (see page 32 of this issue) deals with comprehensive strategic planning. This article discusses business planning for small companies and reviews five microcomputer software packages that facilitate the planning process.

IMPORTANCE OF PLANNING

Decision-making in the small business environment often is characterized by intuitive, “seat-of-the pants” speculation. Decision-making is thought to be done via crisis management–putting out one fire to move on to the next. But the successful business plans systematically for the future, avoiding or significantly reducing the impact of crises.

Although many studies of small businesses have shown a positive relationship between formal planning and organizational performance, such planning is not practiced often by small companies. This is mainly because smaller companies do not have the staff or time to engage in formal planning. Generally, the top manager in a small business is more concerned with running daily operations than with planning for long-term business success.

The planning process forces a company to look at future business operations. Planning means problems can be anticipated and solutions developed. Plans that are well developed, implemented and controlled contribute significantly to a company’s success.

TYPES OF PLANNING

There are two main areas of planning: long-range and short-term, or operational. Both are necessary for the success of any business venture.

Long-range planning includes a company’s efforts to monitor, understand and adapt to a changing environment in order to establish and maintain a favorable competitive position. Environmental assessment, internal analysis and the development of goals, objectives and supporting strategies all affect small business success positively. Time horizons for long-range plans can extend from 3 to 20 years; 3 to 5 years is the norm.

Developing a long-range plan helps the small business differentiate itself from its competitors by requiring management to examine its business mission. And companies with established distinctive competencies are most likely to succeed.

Operational planning is a detailed, quantitative plan that specifies both how the goals for the coming year will be attained and the procedures for managing daily operations. The operational plan outlines the spcific steps to accomplishing the long-range plan. It thus plays a major role in implementing business strategies by translating long-range plans into action.

MICROCOMPUTERS AND THE

PLANNING PROCESS

Recent advances in both hardware and software technology capabilities, coupled with price declines, have fueled computer usage in small companies. Microcomputers provide an effective tool for small businesses to carry out the essential tasks of bookkeeping and financial statement preparation. In addition, microcomputers can mold data into many useful forms and carry out analysis of numerous “what if” scenarios. For example, microcomputers can quickly calculate what the effect on financial statement line items will be if the sales projection is changed. Thus, microcomputers facilitate successful small business planning. (The sidebar on page 55 outlines a business plan for a small business.)

There are two ways to use microcomputers for planning. First, the small business planner can use any one of a number of spreadsheet software packages (for example, Lotus 1-2-3, Excel, SuperCalc, Quatro) to build his own business planning and modeling program or template. This requires a knowledge of both business planning and programming the specific software package being used. The second approach couples a microcomputer with an off-the-shelf, or stand-alone, small business planning software package. These preprogrammed packages not only eliminate the need for a detailed understanding of programming but also provide guidance in planning, modeling and forecasting.

Five software packages developed to aid in small business planning were studied. They are designed to meet the needs of a variety of users. Slim & sleek Plastic has never looked as beautiful as it does on Arc S. Just like its predecessor, Xperia Arc, the new high-end Android phone from Sony Ericsson has stunning looks, complete with a curve in the middle – hence the name Arc – and sleek, clean lines. Yet, for all its design goodness , the fact remains that it’s all glossy plastic. This takes away some of the charm the phone has.

While looks are fine, detailed look into the design reveals a few shortcomings. I do not like the physical buttons on Arc S. My preference for touch-sensitive buttons aside – in my opinion it’s a much cleaner design to have capacitive buttons – the three buttons (Home, Back and Options) on Arc S are too thin for my taste. They feel clunky and slightly difficult to use. Then, there is the camera button. It’s too small and recessed to be comfortable, which is a pity considering that shutter release button is always a welcome addition to a smartphone. In fact, using camera button is so difficult that I preferred using ‘touch-to-snap’ for taking the pictures.

Power button too is on tinier side but because it’s not going to be used too frequently, it’s not much of an issue.

These are the issues that also afflicted Xperia Arc. In fact, Arc S nothing much but just a souped up version of Arc which, despite its design brilliance, fell a little short in terms of raw horsepower in the face of dual-core Android phones that launched in earlier this year.

Arc S still doesn’t come with any dual-core processor but Sony Ericsson believes that for now a bump in processor speed from 1 Ghz to 1.4Ghz is ought to do the trick. GPU duty is handled by Adreno 205. RAM is still the same at 512MB and so is the screen size at 4.2 inches. Resolution is 480 x 854 pixels. Arc S has user accessible storage of just 320MB but an 8GB micro SD card has been bundled.

Fairly fast but low on features Arc S comes loaded with Abdroid 2.3 aka Gingerbread. The OS has been customized by Sony Ericsson with its own user interface called Timescape. Unlike what offered by its competitors, Sony Ericsson’s custom UI has a minimalist design and is mostly focused around making Android look better. In my opinion it’s a good approach to take because it goes well with the overall design of Arc S as well is light on the hardware of the phone.

In terms of performance, lack of a dual-core processor makes little difference. It’s only during installing apps that you feel that phone could have done better with little more hardware. Performance is very smooth and polished. Animations in Timescape UI are pleasing and render well. Talking of performance, I must highlight the keyboard in Arc S. It’s among the best in terms of predictive text and spacing that I have seen on an Android phone.

LCD screen, which utilizes Sony Ericsson’s proprietary Bravia engine for mobiles, is bright and good but it lacks the vibrancy of AMOLED displays. The 8 megapixel rear camera is above average, especially when it comes to photographs taken indoors.

With location functions like navigation and places being an integral part of smartphone experience, I took special care to test GPS. It works very well and even under cloudy conditions managed to get good lock on satellites.

Battery life is also above average for a big Android phone. When used with 3G it is likely to last 10 to 12 hours. If you are on the EDGE you can easily expect a battery life of around 24 hours.

Nothing stands out The problem with Xperia Arc S is not what it offers in terms of performance and overall feel. The issue is with what it doesn’t offer. Given the excellent optimization engineers of Sony Ericsson have done, Arc S rarely feels slow. But still, there is no denying the fact that a dual-core processor helps in certain circumstances, for example during installing apps, browsing several websites at the same time or multi-tasking. Better hardware also means that phone is likely to have longer relevance in the future.

Then, there is poor multimedia playback performance. Arc S has an HDMI port but its usefulness is limited because the codec and resolution support is quite poor for a high-end Android phone. Similarly, despite the high-end tag, there is no 1080P video recording, a feature that is standard on top Android phones.

Arc S is a very functional phone. It is fast, has a good UI and a decent design. Unfortunately, lack of standout features means that it’s slightly over priced at Rs 28,000. The only reason why you should consider Arc S over similarly priced Android phones like Galaxy S II or HTC Sensation is its design – if you like it and don’t mind the physical buttons – and the fact that Sony Ericsson has categorically said the phone will receive Ice Cream Sandwich, the latest version of Android, pretty soon.

7.0 Financial Plan

Elsewares is seeking a $300,000.00 financial package based on a note due in five years but amortized over 15 years. The note will be personally guaranteed by the Greenbaums’ assets. By amortizing the note over fifteen years, the company will be afforded the opportunity to establish a healthy track record which will enable the company to seek alternate financing for the balance. In light of that strategy, Elsewares proposes the following payback schedule:

7.1 Key Financial Indicators

The most important indicator in our case is inventory turnover. We have to make sure that our inventory of drawstring bags and any other packaging products turns over a minimum of five times to avoid a negative impact on our cost of goods sold and on our cash flow.

Collection days is very important. We do not want to let our average collection days get above 45 under any circumstances. This could cause a serious problem with cash flow, because our working capital situation is chronically tight. It may be necessary to

implement a variety of payment terms with different distributors depending on their payment history. In extreme cases, prepayment of orders may be the only extendible terms. We will rely heavily on our subscription to the ASI Credit Service for this valuable pre-sale information.

5.0 Management Team

Elsewares is organized into three main functional areas: product sourcing, sales & marketing; production & shipping; and finance & administration.

Edie Greenbaum: President and founder. Mrs. Greenbaum ran the financial department for a start up retail operation whose sales rose to just under one million dollars in seven years. She has also spent the last year and a half heading up the sales department of an ASI listed advertising specialties supplier. Mrs. Greenbaum holds a B.A. from U.C.L.A., is married and the mother of one child.

Gary Greenbaum: Co-founder Mr. Greenbaum ran the day to day operations of the previously mentioned retail operation as a partner with Mrs. Greenbaum. Mr. Greenbaum holds a B.A. from Franklin & Marshal College, is married and the father of one child.

Marvin Rosenbaum: Consultant. Mr. Rosenbaum has been associated with the Advertising Specialties industry for just under 25 years and hold the credentials of a C.A.S. or Certified Advertising Specialist. Over the years, Mr. Rosenbaum has been hired by both suppliers and distributors who are either starting a new company as we are or who are attempting to penetrate the advertising specialties market with products they are already distributing to other markets. Mr. Rosenbaum has been responsible for the successful entry of many companies into this industry and has maintained extensive business contacts with many of the industry leaders. Mr. Rosenbaum is married and the father of two children.

6.0 Personnel Plan

The cornerstone of the personnel plan is to maximize production and minimize the labor burden on the companies operating expenses. Pursuant to that goal, the initial payroll will consist of the following disbursements:

Until increases in sales can support additional salaries, Edie Greenbaum will oversee the operations of Elsewares in an unsalaried position. Mrs. Greenbaum will be responsible for the day to day operations including personnel company policies, and overseeing the sales & marketing and marketing departments.

The sales & marketing department will be headed by Marvin Rosenbaum who has been hired as an independent consultant at a per diem of $200. Mr. Rosenbaum will be responsible for initiating new leads with the ASI distributor network and for re-establishing existing contacts with distributors with whom he has had a previous business relationship. Mr. Rosenbaum will also oversee the network of commissioned based sales reps that will call on distributors in their preassigned territories. The sales department will be supplemented by Edie Greenbaum who will also be responsible for calling on distributors as directed by Mr. Rosenbaum.

At a salary of $36,000 per year, Mr. Greenbaum will be responsible for running the customer service department which will include handling phone orders and catalogue requests. Additionally, Mr. Greenbaum will be responsible for running the company’s computer operations and is expected to play an important role in sourcing new products.

Until increases in sales justify the additional staffing of this department, Mr. Greenbaum will be responsible for assorted secretarial duties in addition to the previously mentioned duties. We are projecting the division of this department into two positions at approximately the fourteenth month of business. Mr. Greenbaum will then shift his duties to marketing & sourcing and a new employee will take over the customer service department and its related duties.

Elsewares will rely on part time help for its imprinting, warehousing & shipping labor requirements. We have budgeted $500 per week to that end. Naturally, as the need arises, this all encompassing areas will be split into two departments. A full time production person will run the imprinting department while a second person will be hired to handle both shipping and receiving. We are projecting the need for this additional labor burden at approximately the eleventh month of business.

NEW DELHI: Corporates today are adopting more family-friendly and flexible HR policies that help in increase profitability and become instrumental in retaining talent, say industry experts.

Some of the unique HR policies that are being adopted by corporates include leave pooling, adoption leave, free child care placement services, flexible timing, among scores of other such initiative, the experts said.

Accenture has started an “hours of work” policy, wherein an employee can donate his leave to his/her fellow colleague in case of a personal problem or a medical emergency.

Balaji added that “it is a method by which you can increase the motivation of employees, which in turn boosts the productivity of the firm as happier employees are more productive.”

Meanwhile, some of the overseas companies also offer free elder-care service or a baby-sitter, flextime options like cramming a five-day workload into four days, among others.

“We are still lagging behind, but we are progressing and moving in the right direction,” Balaji added.

According to a recent survey by a leading provider of flexible workspace, Regus, a majority of companies surveyed believe flexible working hours have increased productivity.

According to the survey, 87 per cent of Bangalore respondents have said that they work more flexibly, both in terms of time and location than they used to.

In New Delhi only 79 per cent respondents said they work more flexibly followed by Mumbai (75 per cent) and Chennai (73 per cent), the survey which covered 600 senior business managers across the nation said.
